FSA ID

If you're planning to apply for college financial aid, one of the first steps is creating an FSA ID which is a username and password that gives you access to important financial aid tools from the U.S. Department of Education.

Think of your FSA ID as your online signature. You'll use it to:

  • Fill out and sign your FAFSA® form

  • Check and manage your federal student loans

  • Access your financial aid information

  • Apply for other types of federal aid

Here’s how your FSA ID helps:

  • Complete the FAFSA®

    • You and your parent (if you're a dependent student) will each need your own FSA ID to fill out and sign the FAFSA® at StudentAid.gov/FAFSA.

  • Manage Student Loans

    • Log in at StudentAid.gov with your FSA ID to:

    • See your loan balances

    • Make payments

    • Choose a repayment plan

  • Sign Documents Online

    • Your FSA ID acts as your legal electronic signature for important federal student aid documents, like loan applications and repayment agreements.

Who Needs an FSA ID?

Every student applying for federal aid must create their own FSA ID.

  • Parents/Guardians: If your student is a dependent, one parent will also need their own FSA ID to sign the FAFSA®.

    • Exception: If the student's parents have filed "Married Filing Seperately", both parents should create a FSA ID.

  • Spouses (Contributors): Starting with the 2024–25 FAFSA, spouses who are contributors must also create their own FSA ID.

  • Borrowers: Anyone with federal student loans needs an FSA ID to manage their loan account.
